This is a slow place, where the mind and spirit of humans, animals and plants can unite.
Business plan for an ecological integrated accommodation and recreation environment at Punta de Herreria with emphasis on research and proving.
Punta Herrería in Departamento de Izabal is a private owned natural reserve of 250ha, located at the river mouth of the Rio Dulce, Guatemala about 144 mi (or 231 km) north-east of Guatemala City, the country's capital place. The closest airport in Guatemala is Puerto Barrios Airport in a distance of 12 mi (or 19 km), South-East.
PH is situated at the Gulf of Honduras opposite of Livingston, the Garifuna town only reachable by water. Livingston serves as the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name. It was Guatemala's main port on the Caribbean Sea before the construction of nearby Puerto Barrios. Today, Livingston is noted for its unusual mix of Garífuna, Afro-Caribbean, Maya and Ladino people and culture. It is an touristic attraction, like the nearby situated natural touristic sites like waterfalls, hot springs or Caribbean beaches.
The Rio Dulce is an extremely important place for all Caribbean sailing cruisers. The habit of these sailors is to sail the Carribben from December to May. In the “Hurricane Season” from June to November it is too risky to sail or leave a boat in this area. Therefore the Rio Dulce became very famous for the best “hurricane hole”. Going 40 sm up the river to the town of Rio Dulce which offers a lot of useful amenities for sailors. Ample marinas with the possibility to haul out the boats for working on the underwater parts, which must be frequently checked or replaced and the hole hull to be repainted it is a perfect combination. Once knowing the boat in the save, sailors fly home to spent the hurricane season at home.
It is necessary for every boat coming into the Rio Dulce to first check in to Guatemala at the port authority and the customs in Livingston. Same by leaving the Rio. Sailors have to anchor in front of the town of Livingston, take their dinghies, doing the paperwork at land and returning back to their boats. Some times timing is bad due to changing weather on which sailors are dependent, and there is no other chance than anchoring over night to access the opening hours of the offices. In the last years it happened frequently that boats where robbed. Either by cutting the lines and ropes, stealing fenders or dinghies and out board engines.
Therefore a marina at this place would make most of the sailors their life easier without the fear of getting threaten or robbed. Additionally it would give them the advantage to know the boat in save harbor and visit the town or the nearby interesting touristic sites.
PH is a 250ha huge property at the corner from the Rio Dulce river to the Caribbean Sea. It is a natural reserve and implies high rain forest, two rivers, sandy beaches, steep coast, a very hilly terrain, and a lot of jungle ambiance all over the place.

All energy will be supplied by renewable energy, water comes from wells or springs, lots of food comes from our trees or plantations, our boats operate with sails or solar,
We don’t want mass tourism! Only a few chosen will be able to join our project for educational purposes and in special areas with guides and teachers.
At the north east parts there will be lots of jungle eco housing with access to a community only beach. All materials used for building are experimental and of renewable or local harvested products.
This space will be in an area unique to Guatemala and developed, built and maintained in close cooperation with Campus Tec.
Tesla announced the production of solar shingles a few years ago. But it never came to a public release. So why not doing it on our own? This may be an amazing market! ;-)
(We have a friend who is solar dealer and experimented with a Chinese solution 7 years ago. I will ask him for his experience…)
I am sure we can finance at least the whole project with these! If we don’t get in trouble with BP & Co.
Lots of volunteers traveling around the globe want to enrich their own experience but also provide their knowledge of education, ecological building, growing and permaculture, and are welcome to help to build and maintain. The more input from the outside, the wider the range of ideas and finally the diversity of this place.
